Jonathan Chapter Cellist
I studied the 'cello with Doris Vosper and later had lessons with Ross Pople, to whom I
owe an enormous debt. Throughout my school-teaching career, I worked as a freelance
'cellist, playing as a soloist and as a member of chamber ensembles and orchestras
throughout the south of England, and also in Holland and France.
I have been the principal 'cellist of Oare String Orchestra since 1983, a year after its
foundation, and have occasionally played concertos with the orchestra. I play chamber
music whenever I have the opportunity: currently I am playing with pianist Trevor
Brearley. I also take every opportunity to play in ensembles in which I can play my
baroque 'cello.
I usually play a 'cello made by Robin Aitchison of Ely in 2012, which can be seen on his
website. It is a joy to play in every respect! Its tone has already developed in the years
that I have owned it: I am looking forward to its sound in the future.
